Sayın Büyükelçimizin Anzak Günü şehitleri anma töreninde yaptığı konuşma

Ulanbator Büyükelçiliği 25.04.2013

                               SPEECH AT THE ANZAC DAY

                                                                              25.04.2013

Honourable Consular General,

Dear colleagues,

Distinguished guests,

Today we are here to commemorate those who lost their lives during the Battle of Gallipoli, Çanakkale where Anzacs and Turks encountered first time.

As Turkey, we attach utmost importance to this battle because it was not an ordinary one. Despite the suffering and destruction, it was also a battle where a sense of honour, dignity and courage prevailed. During the battle, both sides respected each other, not only as a soldier but also as a human being. Therefore, this war generated a mutual understanding, respect, and friendship. After the war, the bridge was built between the nations and I think it will never be destroyed.

I would like to end my words with the message which was sent to the Australian and New Zealander mothers in 1934 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Great Leader and founder of Turkey:

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side now here in this country of ours... You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land. They have become our sons as well.

May their souls, through the mercy of God/Allah, rest in peace.

Atatürk
